Paralympic Winter Games TV Schedule announced : Digital Home: "Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium announced today it would broadcast fifty-seven hours of high-definition television coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in English and French.

The Games take place March 12 to 21 in Vancouver and Whistler and will feature approximately 650 athletes from more than 40 countries taking part in five sports: alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, and biathlon.

The group’s offering includes 27 hours of coverage in English on CTV, TSN and Rogers Sportsnet as well as 30 hours of coverage in French on RDS and RIS Info Sports.

Highlights include the Opening Ceremony, live coverage of Team Canada’s sledge hockey games and a daily 90-minute recap show with all of the day’s highlights, results and medal standings.

“Along with live event coverage and highlights, we will tell the athletes’ stories of determination and accomplishments, as they go for gold in 2010.” said Keith Pelley, President of Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium"

Invitation for Application
To facilitate community input into the planning, development, and implementation of accessible transit the Toronto Transit Commission has established the TTC Advisory Committee on Accessible Transportation (ACAT).
Its role is to represent the needs and concerns of people with disabilities and seniors who use the TTC and to provide guidance and policy advice to the Commission on issues pertaining to the ways and means of improving conventional and Wheel-Trans services.
Positions on the committee are open to residents of the City of Toronto who have disabilities, as well as, seniors or others who have a knowledge of and an interest in accessible transportation issues. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of a minimum of 15 to 25 hours per month, to attend meetings normally held during regular business hours.
Interested applicants must attend an orientation seminar at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, to obtain more information about the committee and its function. ACAT membership application forms will only be distributed to attendees at the seminars.

A Toronto educator working at a Canadian school in Hong Kong has died after contracting the H1N1 swine flu.

Alan Dick, lower school principal at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong, fell ill on Sept. 20, the school said in a letter. He took the week off, but attended a meeting with school director Dave McMaster on Thursday.

Three days later, Mr. Dick, 55, was admitted to hospital, and “his condition deteriorated rapidly and he passed away in the afternoon of the same day,” Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection said

Canadian International School of Hong Kong - In Celebration of Alan Dick

For many of our students and their parents, Alan Dick personified the Canadian International School. Alan joined us in 1994, when the school was just three years old. A passionate and dynamic educator, and a proud Canadian, Alan created an incredible legacy through his contribution to the development of our school and our community.

He did so not from behind closed doors, but with tremendous personal warmth and charisma. Each and every day, he greeted students at the school entrance, addressing every child by name. Every afternoon, he sent them home the same way. It was all part of creating the "Smile Factor", which was his personal measure of the success of our school. At assemblies that Smile Factor was infectious, as Alan led the children in singing songs ranging from O Canada to the Hokey Pokey. He taught children what it is to be a global citizen, and what it was to be a Canadian.

He also imbued his students with a love of school, a love of learning and a love of education (even if they didn't realize it) by making the school a loving place. Every Valentine's Day he gave out cinnamon hearts brought back especially from Canada. He was a great hugger, and loved to visit the children in class, where he disrupted many an individual lesson, to teach a far larger lesson. In some respects, Alan was a perpetual kids, with his Funny Bunny, Winnie the Pooh staff badge, silly ties, and extraordinary Hallowe'en costumes, but always underpinned with a very adult approach to education. His playful approach won the children's hearts and so, their minds.

Justifiably, Alan was hugely proud of CDNIS, and loved to share that on his weekly tours of the school for the parents of potential students. He was particularly proud of the Leo Lee Arts Centre (LLAC) which he helped design. Although pink was Alan's favourite colour, he chose yellow, his favourite decorative colour, for the lobby. The art on the walls of the LLAC and throughout the school is another of Alan's celebrations of our students, and reflected his own interest in art.

Personally, Alan enjoyed sharing the finer things in life, appreciating wine, martinis, music and art. He traveled extensively but was happiest here, in Hong Kong, and at his cottage in Ontario. As a global citizen, Alan himself bridged two cultures, Canadian and Chinese.

Alan, 55, joined CDNIS from the Canadian Overseas Secondary School in Hong Kong, arriving here in 1990 from Canada where he served as Principal of the Mittimatalik School of Pond Inlet in Nunavut, in the far north. He earned his Bachelor Degree in Education, an Honours Degree in Science and a Masters Degree in Theology, all from the University of Toronto. A dedicated life-long learner himself - the book "The Learning Leader" remains on his desk, now a testimony to the way he sought to live.

Alan is survived by a sister, a brother and his parents.

He was an extraordinary character, larger than life and living life large, and he will be sorely missed as an educator and a friend.

Beginning Monday, TSN2 will be available to Rogers subscribers on a free preview on Rogers Digital Channel 1. At the end of the month, TSN2 will be available to Rogers Digital VIP cable subscribers at its permanent channel location on channel 98. Toronto - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "York was incorporated as the City of Toronto on March 6, 1834, reverting to its original native name. The population of only 9,000 included escaped African American slaves fleeing Black Codes in some states.[23] Slavery was banned outright in Upper Canada in 1834. Reformist politician William Lyon Mackenzie became the first Mayor of Toronto, and led the unsuccessful Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837 against the British colonial government. The city grew rapidly through the remainder of the 19th century, as a major destination for immigrants to Canada. The first significant population influx occurred with the Great Irish Famine between 1846 and 1849 that brought a large number of Irish to the city, some of them transient and most of them Catholic. By 1851, the Irish-born population had become the largest single ethnic group in the city. Smaller numbers of Protestant Irish immigrants were welcomed by the existing Scottish and English population, giving the Orange Order significant and long lasting influence over Toronto society."

FORREST GUMP GOES TO HEAVEN

The day finally arrived. Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven. He is at the Pearly Gates, met by St. Peter himself. However, the gates are closed and Forrest approaches the gatekeeper.

St. Peter said,

'Well, Forrest, it is certainly good to see you. We have heard a lot about you. I must tell you, though, that the place is filling up fast, and we have been administering an entrance examination for everyone. The test is short, but you have to pass it before you can get into Heaven.'

Forrest responds,

'It sure is good to be here, St. Peter, sir. But nobody ever told me about any entrance exam. I sure hope that the test ain't too hard.

Life was a big enough test as it was.

St. Peter continued,

'Yes, I know, Forrest, but the test is only three questions.

First:

What two days of the week begin with the letter T?

Second:

How many seconds are there in a year?

Third:

What is God's first name?'

Forrest leaves to think the questions over. He returns the next day and sees St. Peter, who waves him up, and says, 'Now that you have had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers'

Forrest replied,

'Well, the first one -- which two days in the week begins with the letter 'T'? Shucks, that one is easy. That would be Today and Tomorrow.'

The Saint's eyes opened wide andhe exclaimed,

'Forrest, that is not what I was thinking, but you do have a point, and I guess I did not specify, so I will give you credit for that answer. How about the next one?' asked St. Peter.

'How many seconds in a year?

Now that one is harder,' replied Forrest, but I thunk and thunk about that, and I guess the only answer can be twelve.'

Astounded, St. Peter said,

'Twelve?

Twelve? Forrest, how in Heaven's name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?'

Forrest replied,

'Shucks, there's got to be twelve: January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd... '

'Hold it,' interrupts St. Peter. 'I see where you are going with this, and I see your point, though that was not quite what I had in mind....but I will have to give you credit for that one, too. Let us go on with the third and final question.

Can you tell me God's first name'?

'Sure,' Forrest replied,

'it's Andy.'

'Andy!' exclaimed an exasperated and frustrated St Peter.

'Ok, I can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two questions, but just how in the world did you come up with the name Andy as the first name of God?'

'Shucks, that was the easiest one of all,' Forrest replied.

'I learnt it from the song,

'ANDY WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN.'

St. Peter opened the Pearly Gates,and said:

'Run Forrest, run.'

Give me a sense of humor, Lord.

Invitation for Application

To facilitate community input into the planning, development, and implementation of accessible transit the Toronto Transit Commission has established the TTC Advisory Committee on Accessible Transportation (ACAT).

Its role is to represent the needs and concerns of people with disabilities and seniors who use the TTC and to provide guidance and policy advice to the Commission on issues pertaining to the ways and means of improving conventional and Wheel-Trans services.

Positions on the committee are open to residents of the City of Toronto who have disabilities, as well as, seniors or others who have a knowledge of and an interest in accessible transportation issues. Applicants must be willing to make a commitment of a minimum of 15 to 25 hours per month, to attend meetings normally held during regular business hours.

Interested applicants must attend an orientation seminar at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, to obtain more information about the committee and its function. Seminars will be held in Committee Room 2 on Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and Committee Room 2 on Friday, October 17th, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. ACAT membership application forms will only be distributed to attendees at the seminars.

Adventures in a Wheelchair Village

This is for the able-bodied community. Hopefully it will give an insight in how difficult it can be to live life with an impairment.

Imagine a town full of physically impaired people, all wheelchair users. They run everything: the government, the shops, the factories, the schools, the television studio, the lot.

There are no able-bodied people, so, naturally, when the town is built the community decides that it is pointless to have ceiling ten feet high and doors that are seven feet high. "It's just a lot of wasted space that needs heating," they say. So the ceilings are built at seven feet and the doors at five feet. In every way they design the place the way they want it, and over the years these proportions are standardised by regulation.

One day a few able-bodied people come to stay. One of the first things they notice is the height of the doors. And the reason they notice this is because they keep hitting their heads. They come to stand out by the bruises they carry on their foreheads.

Some doctors, psychiatrists and social workers become involved. The doctors do extensive research and conclude in their learned reports that the disabled able-bodied suffer from "loss of or reduction of functional ability" and the resulting handicap causes "disadvantage or restriction of activity."

Working parties are formed. Many professionals and caring people are worried about what becomes known as the "problem of the able-bodied". Throughout the town there is a rapid growth of real concern. Specially strengthened helmets are distributed free to the able-bodied to be worn at all times. Orthotists design braces, which give support and relief while keeping the able-bodied wearer bent to a normal height.

Finding employment is a major problem for the able-bodied. One man, for instance, applies to become a television interviewer. But he must have a special medical examination when he applies for a job. The doctor, naturally, points out in the report that it would be rather strange to have a television interviewer with a bent back who wears a helmet all the time. Of course the man doesn't get the job and is advised to accept the limitations of his disability.

Finance, of course, becomes a major problem. Various groups of compassionate wheelchair users get together and form registered charities. Twice yearly they hold a collection day, and of course there is the annual telethon, and the "Miss wheelchair village" quest.

Upturned helmets are left in pubs and shops for people to drop their small change into. There is heartening support for organisations such as "The Society for Understanding the Disabled Able-Bodied". There is talk of founding Special Homes.

But then one day it dawns on the able-bodied that there is nothing actually wrong with them, just that society excludes them. They form a union to protect themselves and campaign against segregation. They argue that if ceilings and doors were raised, there would be no problem. But this is, of course a foolish suggestion. You cannot deny disability.

But together, they are a part of an activist exhibition of Canadian Disability History created by students, alumni, community collaborators and faculty in the School of Disability Studies.

It started with a history course, a pedagogical innovation in which each participant was asked to arrive not with a head full of ideas but with an everyday object. Subverting the notion of history as grand events, these “things” chronicled a hidden history of significant struggle in the lives of people with disabilities and their allies.

Out From Under: Disability, History and Things to Remember at the Royal Ontario Museum in April [17 and runs until July 17, 2008. It is a unique exhibit and a groundbreaking event as disability history becomes public history at one of Canada’s pre-eminent museums.

In their presentation, the speakers will illuminate the discoveries they made as “one thing just led to another” along the pathway from teachers to curators. The biggest discovery was how fruitful it can be to fall into history. Unexpected riches emerge when you move from ‘knowing’ to ‘wondering’ and from ‘telling’ to ‘trusting."
