sort of wishes

Walking along the beach, John tripped over a half buried kerosene lantern. He rubbed its side and sure enough, a genie materialized.

"I can't grant your wishes," explained the freed spirit, "But I'll give you three gifts for releasing me: a potion to cure ill health, a very large diamond and a dinner date with a famous movie star. By tomorrow afternoon, you will have received all these gifts."

When John returned home from work the next evening, he excitedly asked his mother if anything had been delivered.

"Yes," she replied. "It's been an unusual day. At 2 pm, a 55-gallon drum of chicken soup arrived. About a half-hour later, a telegram came saying that a long-lost relative had left you a minor-league baseball stadium. Ten minutes ago, MGM called, inviting you to dinner with Lassie tonight."

3-4-1 ticket

Three lawyers and three engineers are travelling by train to a conference. At the station, the three lawyers each buy tickets and watch as the three engineers buy only a single ticket.

"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asked one of the three lawyers. "Watch and you'll see," answers one of the engineers.

They all board the train. The lawyers take their respective seats but all three engineers cram into a restroom and close the door behind them.

Shortly after the train as departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The lawyers saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea.

So after the conference, the lawyers decide to copy the engineers on the return trip and save some money. When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the engineers don't buy a ticket at all.

"How are you going to travel without a ticket," asks one perplexed lawyer.
"Watch and you'll see," says one of the engineers.

When they board the train the three lawyers cram into a restroom and the three engineers cram into another one nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the engineers leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the lawyers are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please."

poetry - LOVE AND DUTY TO PARENTS.

LOVE AND DUTY TO PARENTS.

My father, my mother, I know, I cannot your kindness repay; But I hope that, as older I grow, I shall learn your commands to obey.

You loved me before I could tell Who it was that so tenderly smiled; But now that I know it so well, I should be a dutiful child.

I am sorry that ever I should Be naughty and give you a pain; I hope I shall learn to be good, And so never grieve you again.

But, for fear that I should dare From all your commands to depart, Whenever I'm saying my prayer I'll ask for a dutiful heart.

poetry - CHILDREN PROMISING THEIR GRANDFATHER THEY WILL BE GOOD.

CHILDREN PROMISING THEIR GRANDFATHER THEY WILL BE GOOD.

Though I am now in younger days, Nor can tell what shall befall me, I'll prepare for every place Where my growing age shall call me.

Should I e'er be rich or great, Others shall partake my goodness; I'll supply the poor with meat, Never showing scorn or rudeness.

When I see the blind or lame, Deaf or dumb, I'll kindly treat them; I deserve to feel the same, If I mock, or hurt, or cheat them.

If I meet with railing tongues, Why should I return their railing? Since I best revenge my wrongs By my patience never failing.

When I hear them telling lies, Talking foolish, cursing, swearing, First I'll try to make them wise, Or I'll soon go out of hearing.

What though I be low and mean, I'll engage the rich to love me, While I'm modest, neat and clean, And submit when they reprove me.

If I should be poor and sick, I shall meet, I hope, with pity; Since I love to help the weak, Though they're neither fair nor witty.

I'll not willingly offend, Nor be easily offended; What's amiss I'll strive to mend, And endure what can't be mended.

poetry - THE GOOD-NATURED GIRLS.

THE GOOD-NATURED GIRLS.

Two good little girls, Julia-Ann and Maria, As happily lived as good girls could desire; And though they were neither grave, sullen, nor mute, They seldom or never were heard to dispute.

If one wants a thing that the other could get, They don't go to scratching and fighting for it; But each one is willing to give up her right, For they'd rather have nothing than quarrel and fight.

If one of them happens to have something nice, Directly she offers her sister a slice; And not like to some greedy children I've known, Who would go in a corner to eat it alone.

When papa or mamma had a thing to be clone, These good little girls would immediately run; And not stand disputing to which it belonged, And grumble and fret and declare they were wronged.

Whatever occurred in their work or their play, They were willing to yield and give up their own way; Then let us all try their example to mind, And always, like them, be obliging and kind.

poetry - QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

Who showed the little ant the way Her narrow hole to bore, And spend the pleasant summer day In laying up her store?

The sparrow builds her pretty nest Of wool, and hay, and moss; Who told her how to build it best, And lay the twigs across?

Who taught the busy bee to fly Among the sweetest flowers, And lay his store of honey by, To eat in winter hours?

'Twas God who showed them all the way, And gave them all their skill; He teaches children, if they pray, To do his holy will

Poetry - T. S. Eliot - Hysteria

Hysteria

As she laughed I was aware of becoming involved in her laughter and being part of it, until her teeth were only accidental stars with a talent for squad-drill. I was drawn in by short gasps, inhaled at each momentary recovery, lost finally in the dark caverns of her throat, bruised by the ripple of unseen muscles. An elderly waiter with trembling hands was hurriedly spreading a pink and white checked cloth over the rusty green iron table, saying: "If the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden, if the lady and gentleman wish to take their tea in the garden ..." I decided that if the shaking of her breasts could be stopped, some of the fragments of the afternoon might be collected, and I concentrated my attention with careful subtlety to this end.

Poetry - T. S. Eliot - The Boston Evening Transcript

The Boston Evening Transcript

The readers of the Boston Evening Transcript Sway in the blind like a field of ripe corn. When evening quickens faintly in the street, Wakening the appetites of life in some And to others bringing the Boston Evening Transcript, I mount the steps and ring the bell, turning Wearily, as one would turn to nod good-bye to Rochefoucauld If the street were time and he at the end of the street, And I say, "Cousin Harriet, here is the Boston Evening Transcript."

Poetry - T. S. Eliot - Morning at the Window

Morning at the Window

They are rattling breakfast plates in basement kitchens, And along the trampled edges of the street I am aware of the damp souls of housemaids Sprouting despondently at area gates.

The brown waves of fog toss up to me Twisted faces from the bottom of the street, And tear from a passer-by with muddy skirts An aimless smile that hovers in the air And vanishes along the level of the roofs.

Tax Day

Tax Day

Tax Day, April 15, was looming when an elderly lady
appeared at my desk at the IRS. She said she required
a thick stack of tax forms.

"Why so many?" I asked.

"My son is stationed overseas," she said. "He asked me
to pick them up."

"You shouldn't have to do this," I told her. "It's the base
commander's job to make sure the troops have the forms they need."

"I know," she replied. "I'm the base commander's mother."

NBC-TV,s response to the objections the league had with a recent episode of Committed

CATHOLIC LEAGUE for Religious and Civil Rights: "NBC WILL NOT AIR OFFENSIVE SHOW AGAIN

Catholic League president William Donohue offered the following remarks today on NBC-TVs response to the objections the league had with a recent episode of Committed:
On February 24, I wrote a news release protesting the way the Eucharist was mocked in the February 22 episode of Committed. I asked that NBC retire this episode for good. Alan Wurtzel, Chief Executive for NBCs Department of Broadcast Standards and Practices, contacted me immediately and pledged to review the episode in question. He called today to inform me that this episode will not air again.

On the two occasions that I spoke to Wurtzel, he proved to be fair and decisive. His professionalism has certainly won my admiration. Accordingly, the Catholic League considers this matter closed."
