Cabinet of Curiosities: how Disability was kept in a box — University of Leicester
-- ARC23 - http://arcnwsptr.blogspot.com --
Critically acclaimed actor and performance artist Mat Fraser was
commissioned by the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries at the
University of Leicester to create a new artistic work, shaped out of a
collaborative engagement with museum collections, research and expertise
in medical history, museums and disability. This was a key part of the Stories of a Different Kind project (July 2012 - Feb 2014). CABINET OF CURIOSITIES - how Disability was kept in a box reassessed the ways in which disability and disabled people are portrayed in museums.

Why we need more disabled characters on screen | Q with Jian Ghomeshi | CBC Radio: Disabled characters played by disabled actors
Not all disabled characters are played by able-bodied actors. RJ Mitte (Walter "Flynn" White Jr.) in Breaking Bad, Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) in Game of Thrones and Gabrielle Marion-Rivard in Gabrielle all embody their character's physical and mental disabilities.
Watch the three aforementioned actors at work in the windows embedded below and tell us: do you agree with Shinn that casting able-bodied actors in disabled roles undercuts the power of the work? Would you like to see more disabled actors in film and on television?

Ontario Should Consult People With Disabilities Before Making Laws to Protect Them | Andrew Morrison-Gurza: In 2005, the Province of Ontario enacted the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The goal of this act was to make Ontario fully accessible and inclusive to Persons with Disabilities (PwD) by 2025. This is an important piece of legislation, insofar as it recognizes PwD are an integral part to our social fabric in Ontario. Moreover, the AODA recognizes that more must be done, which is invariably a great start.

Disability Is Not Just a Metaphor - Christopher Shinn - The Atlantic: What do all these characters have in common? They are played by actors who are not disabled in real life.
It’s not hard to understand why: Financial realities necessitate stars in leading roles, and there aren't many disabled actors who are big box-office draws. But even allowing that fact, something strange is going on. The entertainment world keeps producing stories about disabled people, yet almost never casts disabled performers at all—whether in major or minor roles, playing disabled or able-bodied characters. Counterexamples, like RJ Mitte in Breaking Bad or Jamie Brewer in the first and third seasons of American Horror Story, are rare

Stairs
If you've ever been going along and have been stopped by a large flight of stairs, like and share.
If going to a party, stairs have made you tardy, like and share.
If a flight of stairs has led you to go to the back door because you're just too "special" for the front door, like and share.
If you've ever had to use a stairlift because the designers of the building are none too swift, like and share.
If you've ever gone into a shop with one step, and the shopkeepers think you can magically fly over it in your chair, like and share.
If you've ever had to be carried up a flight of stairs, and they thought you would not care, like and share.

Attention Media Reporting on Accessibility News and Culture -
I am writing this open letter to encourage all media to consider devoting one or two pieces a month of coverage to stories relating to accessibility and the culture that surrounds it. For those of you who don't know what I mean by "accessible" I am talking about disability, but that is a term we as a community are trying to get away from. Right now, most of the news reported by the major news sources seem to want to make accessibility a health-related issue, which is not always the case. Sometimes that can actually take away from the message of the story. That's another trend I want to encourage everybody to get away from.
I would also like to encourage the media to bring a wider lens to all aspects to disability. For example, we have roles in all sorts of genres of art and media. We can also bring a fresh perspective to a lot of issues. It would be very helpful for the programs that specialize in arts and entertainment stories to give some time to accessible art projects and accessible artists on a monthly basis.
When the CBC cancelled their disability-issues program "Moving On" they promised to integrate accessible stories into their news, arts and current affairs programming on CBC Radio and television and since that time, the amount of coverage we have gotten has greatly diminished. So I encourage the CBC to put more of an effort into covering accessibility issues even if that means instituting a monthly quota on all their platforms (i.e. Two stories a month/per platform) to start.
I also encourage all the major broadcasters to have at least one reporter who specializes in accessibility issues. I really believe that this will help everybody have a greater understanding of accessibility issues.
Thanks
Adam Cohoon

A Call To Action For All: Shovel The Snow And Save A Life: For those of us who use wheelchairs and other devices, have mobility impairments or are seniors, unplowed sidewalks, streets and walkways are a major accessibility issue. At best, we are trapped indoors unable to leave home to go to work, school, appointments or wherever we were planning to go.At worst, we are forced to put our lives at risk when we have no choice but to wheel in the street to avoid impassable sidewalks. Often, folks who use wheelchairs get stuck in the snow and must depend on the kindness of strangers to rescue them. This has happened to me and many of my friends countless times.

I consider the art I make beautifully palatable but most of it usually has an accessibility theme of some sort. I also believe my art is best created when I can effectively collaborate with the tracker or the other individuals who are assisting me. When I am working well with other people, we can effectively bring out each others strengths. All the skills that I have learned while creating my art, whether it be visual art, photography, video or digital storytelling, I have been able to apply to other areas of my life
