Students asked to revamp wheelchair symbol - Toronto - CBC News

Students asked to revamp wheelchair symbol - Toronto - CBC News: The familiar blue square wheelchair symbol is badly needs a revamp to reflect the modern world, says Ontario Lieutenant Governor David Onley.

“The present symbol of a stick figure in a wheelchair represents less than three per cent of the total population of people with disabilities,” said Onley, himself a wheelchair user. “We want something that's more inclusive, more comprehensive in who it embraces.”

Art Is...

Art Is...

Art is a feeling
A baring of the naked soul
Art is a passion from which beauty is born
It can be brutally honest and at the same time be healing
Art is a joy that lifts you on wings
It is the ability to create a world all your own
Art gives you the eyes to see wondrous things
Art is a song to which they are different lyrics
Everyone has unique ways to hear it
Art is interpreted in every shape, every form
Art is not bound by just one norm
It is finding truth when it is sometimes hidden
Art is sculpting, painting
It can even be written
Art is everywhere you look
You just have to give yourself over to it
Embrace its ups and downs
For art is all around

HELP EVERYONE have this feeling

IMAGINE A WORLD... | Indiegogo

IMAGINE A WORLD... | Indiegogo

Recently in the news, I heard about a man who anonymously donated 500 ($500 worth)of free coffees at a Tim Horton's Kiosk in the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton. This kind random act of kindness then triggered others to follow suit and the gesture was repeated 2 more times.

We have our very own, Adam Cohoon, Laser Eagles Artist, who has graciously and kindly asked that in lieu of gifts for his upcoming birthday, that Friends and Family make a small donation to the Laser Eagles, through Indiegogo. We really appreciate this random act of kindness by our very own Adam, who has put together his very own video message found here!

Please feel free to share this with all of your social networks because we all know that sometimes, someone out there is looking to do something nice to help make a difference and this just might be it!

IMAGINE A WORLD... | Indiegogo

IMAGINE A WORLD... | Indiegogo: All individuals have contributions to make - acts that nurture the individual and the community. Yet, people with limited use of their bodies, those considered to be physically or mentally disabled by some, often lack the resources, opportunities and relationships necessary to fully express themselves to make their contributions to society. Laser Eagles Art Guild is an organization that offers individuals the opportunity for self expression through art. The Laser Eagles will bring people together to passionately reveal their strong spirit and foster their ability to contribute their creativity and insight to the world.

The Laser Eagles Art Guild is one of the only art organizations in the Greater Toronto Area that provides fully-inclusive environments for those who have been labeled with a disability. The Laser Eagles artists gather weekly to create art that is generated solely from their own artistic visions. Laser Eagles’s trackers have formed wonderful nurturing relationships with Artists have produced a variety of artwork that are exceptional.

Abilities Arts Festival CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Abilities Arts Festival CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: The Sharon Wolfe Artist In Residence program is intended to allow a disability-identified artist to undertake a project that advances their own artistic goals and practice, and which has the potential to benefit the wider community of artists with disabilities.

For the last 10 ten years, AAF has been presenting and promoting the work of exceptionally talented artists across the entire spectrum of disciplines. The Sharon Wolfe Artist In Residence program allows us to take this mandate a step further. Few artists have the luxury of devoting themselves completely to their practice; the vast majority must subsidize their work by juggling one or more paid positions. While funding poses a significant challenge for all artists, people with disabilities encounter a host of additional accessibility obstacles.

Named in honour of the organization’s founding Artistic Director Sharon Wolfe, the SWA Residency is intended to offer the resident artist an opportunity to devote themselves to a specific program of work, while simultaneously contributing to a larger dialogue and sense of engagement with the wider community of disability artists in Toronto.

#moreaccessible

Twitter / Search - #moreaccessible

The hope of using the #moreaccessible hash tag is to help to try and bring together everyone to talk about accessibility issues, whether it be physical barriers or challenging conventional ideas. It can be used to share news stories related accessibility, interesting ideas and thoughts and also messages about accessibility.
The great movements of the past all got going when individuals all came together to fight for a common cause. They might have all been trying to reach different goals in that fight, but they realized that they would get further by fighting together. As has been shown by these great movements, when you work collectively, massive change can happen.
The community is fractured with everybody having their own thoughts and beliefs. And everybody has their own labels and agendas. But by putting all of it together, we create one voice, which will tell the world that we want it to be #moreaccessible.
