The piece received its premi�re in a concert entitled An Experiment in Modern Music, which was held on 12 February 1924 in Aeolian Hall, New York, by Paul Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano. It has since become one of the most popular American concert works.

It began at Bloor and St. George around 2:40pm, when a man hailed a taxi, got in and then told the driver he was carrying a bomb. The cabbie quickly departed the vehicle and alerted authorities, who took no chances and brought out the heavy artillery."
